Good Morning and Welcome to Sunday.....and 13 more sleeps 'til Christmas 🎄
As I was sitting on the porch this morning whilst still dark (yes, the wind is now out of the North, a lot chillier and wilder than it was yesterday, and I was the crazy one wrapped up in a huge blanket with my mug of coffee), I was looking across the grounds of the inn and thinking, that almost 100 years ago, I could be doing exactly the same thing....sitting on the porch of the then "Atlantic View Hotel" - the beautiful building having been built in 1928.

I was thinking about all the changes that would have been made over the years - the evolution of the inn. From being the first hotel ever to be built on Hatteras, and also the first commercial property to have electricity (from a generator in the shed) on Hatteras, to now being a welcoming retreat for visitors to the island, where they can be guaranteed a unique bed and breakfast experience.....and even more importantly...it's the place we call our Home.

It's so easy to get caught up on all the things we still want to do with the inn, new ideas and plans to further improve what we offer.....what we can do better....how we can make a more viable business model to support our life in Hatteras - and before I know it.....welcome to my "maelstrom mind"!!!!!!!

At this point all I need to do is take a wonder around the inn to see what we have already achieved. From a rundown old building with a roof that had so many holes.... when it rained, you had to wear your waterproof jacket inside the structure there was so much water pouring in the roof. A closed down hotel, a shell of its former self, which sat sad and silent, back a little from the road, waiting to have life breathed back into it (or torn down and replaced 😥, it’s difficult to even write this down, the very thought horrified me)….to a beautiful truly unique hotel –that’s still a "work in progress", our "labor of love".

As I pondered on, I began thinking about how we should do a similar exercise with our lives when we feel we still have much to do, or feel like we aren’t making any progress…. that we’re stuck.
Like my beautiful century old inn…. I’m a work in progress – and all I need to do is to sit for a while and think of my accomplishments…. your very own "Before and After" if you like.
Accomplishments may sound too grand a word for things you have done, but I don’t think so. We all have accomplishments in our life…..whether it be graduating from High School or college, being a son or daughter, a Mom or Dad, leaving home, getting your first job, making your paycheck stretch to pay your rent, feed and clothe you, looking after an elderly relative, breaking free from addictions like drugs or alcohol, helping a friend out, helping a stranger out, learning a new skill, finding your own unique talent (of which I truly believe absolutely everyone has)…….this list could fill books and books, but I think you get the picture. We all accomplish things in our lives both big and super small, but the one thing they all have in common is, that You did it…. You either made it happen or helped to make it happen.
Instead of focusing on the myriad of things you haven’t done in your life or the countless things you still have to do……Why not spend a little time thinking about how far you’ve come – and if you do that, you’ll realize that you really are capable of anything you put your mind to.
For me, the photos below remind me of how far I’ve come from my roots back in Scotland, my incredible journey so far….and where I am now – Still a "work in progress", and I’m okay with that, in fact I love it, it gives me the option to have plenty more of my adventures!

Yes....this is me on my hometown beach of Ayr - You can see I always was a tad determined ...and I still have the same chubby little legs!!!

My Hatteras beach - thousands of miles from Ayr in Scotland.....and Still a "Work in Progress"😊

Until Next Time,
Take Care, Stay Safe..... and please remember how far you have come....you may be pleasantly surprised 😊
Love and Hugs,
Pam 💗

When we stop believing we are a work in progress, we stop growing. Never stop growing.
